The Langley Academy | Homework Policy
Independent Study/Homework Schedule
Homework provides your child an opportunity to consolidate and further their understanding of work they have done in class. Homework reinforces the ability to work independently, a vital skill necessary to ensure your child’s success. At The Langley Academy homework is set regularly. We encourage parents and carers to check their child’s planner (every night if possible) and Show My Homework so that they can look through their homework with them. We believe this helps parents and carers gain a better understanding of the work that takes place in the Academy and leads to better outcomes for their children.
At The Langley Academy we believe parental voice is very important. In response to feedback from parents regarding homework, we have developed and published a homework schedule which should help parents support their child organise their evenings and weekends. However, please understand homework may be set on different days as students are taught at different times, but they will all be given sufficient time to complete the homework.
Our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) runs an after academy homework club. In addition your child can access help and support from their teachers at the end of the day. If you have any questions about your child’s homework please contact the subject teacher concerned via email.
All homework is set on Show My Homework (SMHW) which parents and students have access to. The Academy’s SMHW calendar can be found here.

Key Stage 5 Homework
At Key Stage 5, all students are provided with a minimum of 5 extra hours of independent work per week which includes flipped learning exercises, pre-reading and note taking, research, wider reading and examination revision/practice. Key Stage 5 students are supported to complete independent study with the allocation of supervised study and Prep sessions.
Independent Study & Prep
Within our Academy day we provide students with two 40 minute sessions on a Monday and Tuesday to learn vital Independent Learning skills through Prep sessions. In Key Stage 3, students alternate between numeracy activities, the Accelerated Reader programme and Independent Study (such as private revision and completion of homework). At Key Stage 4, students utilise Prep sessions to prepare for assessments and examination and to complete independent study and homework. Year 12 students have one Prep session per week where they complete private study and the other Prep session they support younger students in tutor bases. Year 13 students make the full use of the Prep sessions to complete independent study.
In line with the National Literacy Trust's recommendation that every student should be reading independently for 20 minutes per day, students should aim to build this in to their study. This can be done in Prep Time, Tutor Time, English Lessons, Break Time, Lunch Time and for homework.
A key part of the Independent Study programme is about learning from the world around us. Berkshire has a plethora of places worth exploring, including museums, theatres and nature. We consider this a valuable part of any child’s education and would encourage you to accompany your son/daughter on trips and visits that support their learning.
